Why Meditation Should Be Part of Your Everyday Routine by Breanna Bolliger

Do you ever feel anxious getting up in the morning and don’t feel ready to take on the day?

If your answer is yes to this question, then you should develop an early morning self-care routine

like 5 – 10 minute meditation to relieve your stress.

For any of you that is a student in University, we can all agree that this time of year can get a

little stressful given that there is so much to get done from assignments and midterms.

All of our negative, stressful symptoms arise from these events and can affect how we are able to

accomplish tasks as well as cope with the stress.

There are so many ways to meditate and relieve your stress symptoms!

Personally, I go on Youtube and listen to a 10 minute session of quiet instrumental music, but perhaps

if you are interested in a more “guided” session, you could utilize the app called “calm”.

Some of us may find it difficult to settle ourselves down and meditate. I can totally agree with this.

When I first started to do this as part of my daily routine, I found it to be very difficult to be able to

calm my mind and free all my thoughts. But, here are all the steps you need to

lead a successful, relaxing, stress-free meditation:

1. Sit upright or lie down comfortably.

2. Find a place in your home where you feel less stressed.

3. Close your eyes

4. Make no effort to control your breath

5. As the meditation session progresses, start to focus your mind on how you

inhale and exhale and keep note of how your body moves with your breathing pattern.

But, try doing this without controlling your breathing rate. Breath naturally

6. The most difficult part in a mindfulness session, is being able to clear the mind from all thoughts.

If your mind wanders at all during the session, try to direct your mind back to the focus on your breath.

For many of you who are unfamiliar with meditation and don’t know the positive effects of this

practice on your mental health, let me assure you there are many benefits that include the following:

1. decreases blood pressure

2. decreases heart rate

3. Improves circulation throughout the entire body

4. Reduces anxiety

5. Increases feelings of well-being

For me, meditation has become part of my daily routine and has become a necessary aspect to my life!

I truly believe that there are so many ways to relieve our stresses that we may endure throughout our lives

but all we need to do is put the effort and time into trying to control our stress when it may become

out of hand.

Hope everyone is doing well during these times and maybe you have just found your

solution to all your negative and stressful feelings!
